I've been asking this question for a couple of years, with no good answers yet appearing.

Why do 'case modders' use those stupid fanbus things? Wouldn't it be way more slick to use a variable thermistor or software control to adjust fan speed?

I don't know of any fan controllers with thermistors, but there are a couple of fans with them built in. Notably, the Thermaltake SmartFans. I have a SmartFan II with thermistor control as my CPU fan, and it works great. The only downside is it's a pretty loud fan, even at lower speeds.
