Journal SIGALRM's Journal: Focus 1

I've been a programmer for many years, and although I consistently write intelligent, useful software--I've seen ups-and-downs in my own ability to crank out truly great code.

You know what I mean? Some days are a struggle. Slashdot doesn't help. If you can lend some advice about minimizing coding distractions, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you.

Focus

  • I always find several things helpful:
    • Low light, especially coming from your CRT. If you can get a flat panel, even better.
    • An enclosed space.
    • Trance music, delivered at a modestly high volume through high-end headphones. Even if you don't like techno, it always seems to make it far easier to focus. A free trance stream (that works with xmms) can be found at Digitally Imported [www.di.fm]
    • Not logging in to any instant messaging programs, reading your e-mail, etc. Only serves to draw your attention from your primary

Old programmers never die, they just hit account block limit.
