Journal MonTemplar's Journal: Shrek 2 10

They had an advance screening at our local VUE (was Warner Village) multiplex this weekend - it's not due to go on general release in the UK until the 2nd of July. Went up there Saturday evening to the first show, and the foyer was packed!

For some reason, Larry King was replaced by Jonathan Ross (UK chat-show host, presents BBC's Film programme) as the voice for the Ugly Stepsister, in the UK cut. Don't ask me why, but he did a good job.

There were a few other bits in there that may have been added or changed especially for us Brits. Shirley Bassey gets a name-check (doubt that would register with most Yanks), there's a Faulty Towers moment (not surprising, since John Cleese is in it), and possibly a few more. Oh, and of course Jennifer Saunders and Rupert Everett.

Yes, I made sure to stay back while the main credits rolled. Sucks if you missed the last scene. One word - 'dronkeys!'. :)

Saw the trailer for Thunderbirds. A bit too much fast-cutting for my tastes, and only the one clip at the end with Lady Penelope and Parker (boo!), but definitely one I'd like to check out when it's released.

  • the Fawlty Towers reference? I missed that one! I've got about every Fawlty Towers line memorized too.
    • When the King is stood out on the balcony, and Fairy Godmother shows up... "Are you all right out there?" "No, no, nothing's the matter, dear! Just my crusade wound playing up, in fact I'll just stay out here a bit and stretch my legs..." :)

      • Oh man. I missed that completely! Good catch. Ha!! I was ecstatic when I realized John Cleese was the voice of the king. I didn't know any of the voices (other than Murphy, Myers and Diaz) ahead of time.

        Twas a good flick!
      • That was in the US version, as well, although I have no idea in what sense the old crusader wound is a fawlty towers reference (I can't have seen more than half a dozen episodes.)

It was a fairly funny movie - a much better entertainment value than most of what hollywood turns out, certainly.

Several movie reviews complained that the film was unnecesarry - extraneous material from an epilogue for the original Shrek. By implication, of course, they mean to say that the original Shrek was "necesarry" - meanin

I know who that is... Little Voice is one of my favorite movies... and Shirley Bassey is in LV's repertoire

Oh, and of course Jennifer Saunders
Sweet!!! I'm an old Ab Fab fan... well, even before that... I loved French and Saunders (ever see the Young Ones episode with Jennifer Saunders???)

    • i was under the impression that many americans would recognize shirley bassey. if nothing else, americans do watch james bond movies. that means they here the theme songs, too.

a few years ago she even appeared in a coca cola commercial. she was singing her vocals for the propellerheads tune "history repeating."
