Stamp honour for film hero Wayne

Late film star John Wayne has been honoured with a commemorative postage stamp by the US postal service.

The stamps, featuring Wayne in a classic cowboy pose, were unveiled at a charity event for the John Wayne Cancer Institute on Saturday in California.

The stamp is part of the postal service's annual Legends of Hollywood series, which has honoured stars such as James Dean and Marilyn Monroe.

Wayne has appeared on a stamp before, as Ringo Kid in Stagecoach in 1990.

"He would be glad to know he will be visiting the homes and businesses of millions of his fans every day," said Ethan Wayne, one of Duke's seven children.

  • So, why don't the issue the stamp under his real name [surfnetinc.com]?

Wayne was born Marion Morrison in Winterset, Iowa in 1907, but the family moved to California around 1915.

Some biographies list his real name as Marion Michael Morrison, while others refer to Marion Robert Morrison and other variations.

Who else would they do that too? Everyone knows him as "John Wayne" so why put his real name there? Not everything is a gay issue.
      • ... which begs the question of why he found it necessary to change his name in the forst place ...
        • Because
          a) All of the stars did it to sound "cool" or "American".
          b) John Wayne sounds like a cowboy's name and Marion doesn't. :)
          • John Wayne sounds like a cowboy's name and Marion doesn't. :)
So how about "a boy named Sue?" (Johnny Cash song)?
            • That's a great song, isn't it? :) I get a kick out of it every time.

Well, you have completely destroyed my position!

Of course, my original (and current) position was only to say that it would be silly to change his name back since everyone knows him as John Wayne. I don't know of many famous people that would suddenly have their name reverted back to their original name so they could make a stand against homophobism (I think I made a new word!).

Wasn't there some other famous "real" cowboy who had a rea
              • What's really weird in the entertainment business is when a guy has to change his name from his real name to a stage name because someone else is already using that name as a stage name (comic Chris Lorne or Chris Elliot, IIRC).

Don't panic.
