I've always called them "arabic numerals". That's as much as I know, though. Did the Arabians get them from india?

They did indeed, that's why the system is sometimes called "Hindu-Arabic". Actually, I think that the concept of zero was developed in India sometime in the first few centries AD, say sometime between 400 and 600. The Arabs picked it up and it made it to Europe by around 1100, where it was promptly banned by the Church as an infidel concept
