Journal Chacham's Journal: Verbiage: webmail providers and too many cookies. 6

Well, after seeing more perversion in Hotmail's ads, i finally decided to move it into Mozilla, where i can block the ads easily. That's when i found how many cookies it wanted.

hotmail.msn.com sets three.
login.passport.net sets one.
login.passport.com sets one.
msn.com sets five.
passport.com sets eight.

That's eighteen cookies!

For comparison of other email providers.

mail.moocow.com sets four.
mail.yahoo.com sets six (four at yahoo.com, two at mail.yahoo.com)
mail.com sets eight (mail.com sets six, mail01.mail.com sets two).

Generally, blocking any one cookie restricts access to the site.

I only have hotmail for my resume. It was commented to me to have a "normal" address, to which i somewhat agreed.

But why do they need so many cookies?

Mozilla can pick and choose which cookies it stores. All you have to do is uncheck the "Use this setting for all cookies from this site" box on the cookie prompt window. Then only that particular cookie will be be refused.

One option I always set in mozilla is "Enable cookies from originating site only." This should make it so when you are hitting site x.com, only cookies for x.com will be allowed to be set, where advertising.com cookies will be auto ignored if they want to be set.

  • What perversion did you see in Hotmail ads porky?
  • If you're willing to drop a few dollars a year their way, Spamcop does a great job: good spam filtering (hence the name), with total user control (anything from no filtering, through SpamAssassin and/or blacklists, to whitelist-only) - and it can collect your Hotmail mail for you, filter it, and display it for you via HTTPS webmail, IMAP or POP (or forward to another account). No ads, besides a small plug for their hosting company, and as far as I can tell only a single cookie - which is itself optional (yo
  • Maybe Novell's myrealbox.com...10MB of storage and pop3 access. Of course, they're not accepting new users because of hardware problems right now which is probably not much of a recommendation, but it might be worth a look.

This file will self-destruct in five minutes.
