Journal JDWTopGuy's Journal: How much can my 90Mhz Pentium system take? 6

Okay... as you may know, I have a 90Mhz pentium system with a 500MB hard drive and 32MB of RAM.

The question is, how much junk can I load it with until it explodes? I'm already running penggy (dial AOL from linux/*BSD), ip forwarding/masquerading, distributed.net client and personal proxy, finger, hourly stats run script, and squid (in a feeble attempt to speed up browsing over the network).

Anybody got recommendations on what else I could put on it? I suppose I could install apache and use http for my RC5-72 stats instead of finger.

How much can my 90Mhz Pentium system take?

  • Make it an open proxy!

Or make sure that you enable open forwarding on SMTP ... that happened to me when I was using Windows 2k on a Pentium 233, and it COMPLETELY fried the box. My next server was my first linux box :)
    • It's on dialup, so it wouldn't make much sense to run an open proxy. I could set up a mail server on it, I suppose, but I really don't have any use for one. And I wouldn't touch sendmail under any curcumstances (sp?).

Speaking of fried servers, when will zoplionah be back up?
      • My server really isn't fried at the moment, it is just in quarantine. I am working on a replacement, but an entry into my apache configuration file was changed, enabling PHP scripts to be executed through my upload script on my site. And you all know what that means ...

Right now, I am working on a much more secure replacement (which I have been meaning to do). Don't worry, none of your files were lost. This server wasn't really ever meant to host websites.

I plan on having the new server up before mond
        • Well I knew it couldn't be literally fried. What exactly do you mean when you say it wasn't meant to host websites?

So you got cracked? Major bummer. Anyway, glad to hear the site will be back up soon. :-D
  • How crappy does it have to be to be live? :-)
