Journal CleverNickName's Journal: Get your kicks 15

I dunno if anyone who reads this journal reads my website, or even visits my website . . . but my wife and I did this major road trip to Tulsa last year for a big old Star Trek convention. Along the way, we took about 600 pictures, and I've been steadily adding them to my gallery.

Last night and this morning, I uploaded and captioned a TON of photos in the Eastbound New Mexico and Eastbound Texas Roadtrip galleries, and I think they don't totally suck. There are also links in some of the captions to AudioBlogs I did along the way, and if it works out to look at the pictures and listen to me talk about them, I may do some sort of multimdeia e-book someday about the trip.

I-10 somewhere between Texas and California there is an old car that looks like it is from the 1930s or 40s sitting just off the side of the road. I don't know why I remember that. It struck me as kind of romantic in a way. That abandoned car just sitting for decades with all those people driving by. Who left it and why?

If I ever go that way again I'm taking a picture.

    1) Kansas Cosmosphere [cosmo.org], Hutchinson, KS. Yes, it is a bit out of the way, but you, of all people, should go. You ain't gonna see Apollo 13 anywhere else.

    2) Go through the Gpysum Hills on the way out of Hutch - US160 West from Medicine Lodge.

    3) Liberal Air Museum, Liberal, KS (yes, it may sound like an oxymoron, but that is indeed the town name).
  • Wow - those pictures brought back a lot of memories of my drive back east in 1999. I had been stationed in 29 Palms, CA and was heading to my new duty station in Quantico, VA (via some Christmas leave at home in Indiana). I went the same route - absolutely incredible. I still think back to driving through Arizona and Texas especially. I loved every minute of it & can't wait to drive that route again when I get an excuse. I wish I had been smart enough to take some pictures, but now I can show my girlfri
  • You should ask the BBC to hire you to do a travelog :)
  • Years ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a shutter bug. Then 35mm photography got too expensive and I gave it up.

This past year, I bought a Aiptek stick camera and it rejuvinated me. Now I have a Argus Digital Camera and have gone crazy.

Now I need to spend time captioning and creating a better presentation. Currently I use php scripts and create thumbnails using OSSIM apps [ossim.org]. I use my SlashDot JE [slashdot.org] as an introduction or tickler.

Like a lot of software, the photo documentation is lacking ;-). I'm too bus

    • What software are you using to create your galleries and thumbnails?

I have a Cannon Powershot A40 (supported by gphoto!).

Most of these pictures were uploaded into my iBook while we were on the trip, and saved into iPhoto. Then I took the 600 or so photos and exported them into their own folder, and sftp-ed them from my iBook to my Red Hat machine. (Yeah, I know there's some way to use lisa or something to make network browsing work, but I've never been able to do it, so I do a lot of ssh and sftp between
      • Thks. Someone told me about jphoto also. I use iPhoto for image enhancement/rotation but normally I just batch process the entire lot (rename, reduce and thumbnail). So I'll stick with my Linux scripts and OSSIM for that.

But I'll check out gallery. Its the sizzle that sells the steak...Cheers.

      • Now you need to go out and buy the LA-DC52B filter/lens adapter ($20-25) so that you can go out and buy Hoya's R72 (52mm) near-infrared filter/pass-through ($20-40). You can probably buy both on ebay or B&H Photo (www.bhphotovideo.com).

I've shot LOTS of infrared photos with my A40. You'll need a tripod or a VERY steady hand - or just a flat spot to put the camera. Shoot with the 2 second timer at (in bright, direct sunlight) about .5 to 1.5 seconds in manual mode. I have to shoot in the "flower" mo
  • Acoma is open to outsiders; I know because I'm one and have been up there a few times. (I live in Albuquerque.) People actually live up there, and try to strike a balance between the totally understandable desire for privacy, and getting tourist dollars. There's a paid tour (which is interesting and worth seeing, IMHO) and several craft merchants who sell pottery, jewelry, etc.

I'm sorry you didn't get to go up; maybe you were just there on the wrong day or something.

(BTW, the plant in picture 2719 is

Elliptic paraboloids for sale.

Working...
