Journal Dave2 Wickham's Journal: On the subject of michael, and removing him from my prefs 11

I don't think there are many slashdot readers who actually like michael; I'm not one of them. I've been annoyed with michael's stories for a while, but not too bothered. This slowly built up, until the final straw - Your Rights Online: RIAA Threatens More Music-Lovers". My first thought was of... I dunno, backslashdot.org [a fictional entity for the purposes of this JE] posting "Your Rights Online: FSF Threatens More Linux-Lovers" on the subject of Linksys et al.

I finally removed michael from my preferences; I see no more of his stories. There's a slight problem though; michael does so many of the stories, I miss a lot of them. So what should I do - keep blocking michael and miss out on the stories? Or unblock him and get trolled. I think I'll stick with the former for the time being.

  • I blocked Jon Katz stories a long time ago and haven't missed anything. However, I think Michael, while having a high chaff to wheat ratio, has enough good stuff in there that missing it not worthwhile. I'd sugggest periodically browsing though his postings (I think there is a way) all at once. This is kind of like browing through all the Spam mail in your box periodically to make sure something important didn't get bounced.
    • Yep. BLocked J/K a long time ago, and been quite happy about it.
    • Yeah, I tend to have a once over of "older stuff" every so often, so I don't fully miss it; though it would be nice to only see michael stories as you suggested.

Luckily this is slashdot; if there is a story I miss, I'll probably pick it up in the dupe ;) (yeah, /. has got much better recently for that).
    • Jon Katz is still posting? I blocked him after the first few articles when I cold see that he was suffering from delusions of omniscience.

Get the stories via email instead. Much easier to skim, and as an added bonus, all the comments are already there. :)
    • I used to do this, but to be honest I can't really be arsed any more; I only tend to pick up stories at the end of the day anyway, for "bedtime reading" (so to speak). I don't often reply to stories, so don't lose much.
  • I can't recall any 'must read' stories from slashdot (well, when the first Halloween memos surfaced about a week after I got my UID:) and even fewer posted by michael. If something is truly important, I'll catch a reference in a journal, a follow up story, etc.
  • As far as I can recall he mostly contains his worst posts to YRO. Just block that.

I was thinking the same thing about blocking Michael until I saw that he posted ALL the stories from Saturday to Sunday morning. (Oh, and by the way he ignored my story corrections).

    • Yeah, that was really annoying, coming on quite late and seeing ~4 stories posted for the whole day...

Blocking YRO sounds like a good idea actually, it mostly seems to be filled with people who are concerned about people putting RFID tags in crates in warehouses and people who argue for copyright being removed etc (I seriously hope they aren't GPL supporters... that'd mess them up a load)

The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning, and does not stop until you get to work.
