It's not a bug, it's an undocumented feature.

I think a traditional way to initialize a disk is something like dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/hda1 count=1.

Does bloat require sudo or root for installation?

1) Luckily I got it back *phew*, I'm sure it was /dev/hda2, but apparently my partition is actually /dev/hda6... Probably me being an idiot again.

2) Nope, bloat doesn't need anything, I'm running it on my sourceforge account in ~/.local/bin/ and appropriate modifications to my PATH.
