Journal ceejayoz's Journal: Moderate Islamic Clerics 3

In a debate here in the Slashdot journals about a week ago, I was attempting to find articles on moderate Islamic clerics. While I wasn't able to find the article I'd been looking for, I just found this new one.

He's the grandson of the Ayatollah Khomeni, and he advocates the US invasion and liberation of Iran, is against executions (on the grounds that no imam is infallible).

Frankly, he sounds like a very reasonable kind of person the US should be working with to promote their ideals and goals in the region.

  • I am happy to stand corrected. :-)

Hitchens manages to piss everybody off about equally, so I'm willing to believe he got the quotes right.

  • Maybe the war in Iraq really will inspire some positive change elsewhere in the region, as long as we can manage not to botch the reconstruction. I knew that the Iranians were getting sick of their theocracy, but to hear the man wish for an American invasion is pretty shocking. It was cool to hear him say what I've always thought -- that church and state should be separated for the good of both. When you combine the two, you corrupt both.
