Journal SlashChick's Journal: One day... 38

One day, I stopped in the middle of a bunch of work.

I had been on the phone with clients and potential clients all day. I'd just signed a huge web design contract, I had a fair amount of money in the bank, and I'd finished setting up a new reseller server so Simpli could offer reseller hosting plans.

I'd just finished setting up our last dedicated RaQ 550.

I OKed a lease on a new condo (I'll be moving next month.)

I used the last of our initial capital and began preparing a cash-flow statement so we could get more.

And I was busy writing a proposal for a new web design customer.

Somehow, in the middle of all that, I stopped. I looked up. And I realized that my company -- the company I've been pouring my heart and soul into for over a year now -- was finally successful. In that moment, I knew that from here, there was no place to go but up. Keep hiring. Find an office. Start the big advertising. Secure additional capital, because we are PROFITABLE. And keep our clients happy, because they've been referring new clients like mad.

For my entire life, I have been building companies... and now I've built one that has its own legs and is running on its own. This is a magical moment -- that one moment when you look out the window and you realize that this is what your entire life until now has been preparing you for. It's an indescribable feeling, but one that is extremely special.

I made it.

I will remember this for a long time to come... the first moment I realized that it really was all going to work out. I built this company from the ground up, and it has become more than I ever thought possible. All I can think is "I did that." And I am amazed.

:)

  • Yes, you are successful. And don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise. You have a very strong will, one that will always keep you moving toward ever-higher goals and acheiving them.

I, for one, am very proud (and perhaps envious) of you.

    Congratulations :)

  • First off, congratulations. You have built a company during a time of unprecedented market depression in the tech industry. Not a feat to be taken lightly. Write this experience down in someplace other than /. for safe-keeping. The memories will be important years from now to you or perhaps....others.

  • Here's to continued success!
  • May fate not smack you down for saying it out loud. :)

    • I keep meaning to ask you about your signature. What's up with that?

I'm the only Simpli employee in CA right now, but Devon should be moving out here in a couple months. That's when I'll probably get the office. It's becoming a necessity... a home office just doesn't cut it these days.

Re: your personal life... that's a good thing! My entire life consists of work, work, work, and talking about work. ;) I don't have much of a social life. Sometimes I get down about it... particularly when I've said "no" so

        • That's funny... I've lived in Pleasant Hill for a little over two years, so I'm very familiar with that area. You probably only lived a couple miles away from me (I'm in zip code 94523, which is shared with Concord.)

I'm glad to hear you like it in Colorado, though. Housing prices are ridiculous here. Renting is better than buying at this point. It'd be nice to live in a place where prices were more reasonable!

            • Purchased new house in Colorado for 45K less. "new" as in "not finished yet so we got to pick out tile, flooring, colors, etc"

I strongly prefer older houses (40+ years or more) to the junk that passes for most new construction. It seems like anything built during the last 20 years is already falling apart by the time it 5 years old.

If you can afford a custom home you can still get something that is well built.

                • We walked through when they were framing and they had a 12-month walkthrough program. (1, 7 & 11, actually). Some shit they (Shea Homes) didn't fix, but they did lots, too. Nice experience, actually.

That sounds decent. I just find myself dismayed at the crap that is getting put up out near where I live (and the 5-10 year old houses that are already falling apart). Still houses aren't nearly as bad as what is being built for apartments and condos.

I'll take it over my 50-year old termite-ridden, built

Same thing in the Seattle area, it isn't as bad as the Bay Area yet but the prices aren't really sustainable. While you can still find reasonably priced houses within commuting distance (Tacoma anyone?) I'm not sure I want to live that far away.

Hopefuly the current real-estate bubble will burst and prices will
  • Congratulations! Here's to continued success and a coffeemaker that always works. ;)
  • I had my dreams set on running my own mercenary company after playing Final Fantasy 8. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a failure. Local in/export laws are kinda shitty when it involves importing an Mi-24 assault gunship from Russia by mail-order. Even if I WOULD get it past customs I'm pretty much convinced the dutch goverment would find a way to suck 20% VAT out of the gunship at the original price. Besides, most petty conflicts are in Africa and it's too damned hot to fight a war over there...

    Anywa

So, you might be surprised at what corporations can actually purchase. Apparently (in the U.S. at least) corporate ownership of certain "tools" is allowed. For instance, you might be surprised to find out that many of the soldiers you see on TV in Bosnia, Afghanistan etc... (or even guarding US military installations such as Groom Lake) are not U.S. military. Rather, they are employees of
  • But say.. aren't condo appartment bad? They said they are in Fight Club!

(Not that I know what a condo is.. babylon says it's an appartment in a shared building, but there must be more subtext).

Will you be living with your bf?
    • Get me a girlfriend, Now!

Hey, if you're looking for a g/f, come here to Israel - there's an abundance of intelligent, spiritual, hot Jewish girls here. ;-)

      • Yes. There are many girls here, but they are either snobbish or unavailable.
      • Just in case it wasn't clear: I am in Israel. If you know where can I find the girls you mentioned, then tell me.

Well here in J-m you could go have a shabbat meal at Rabbi Machles' place in Maalot Dafna, if you're into that kind of thing. I met my soon to be wife there about 2 months ago.

  • Stick around in the BA, we need people like you here. (I live in Fremont, grew up in Albany)
  • Congrabulations. A winner is you!

Now, prepare to be innundated with requests for employment. :-)

  • And... umm.... hire me? =)
  • Is this you?

I'm guessing no... I'm guessing, of course, that you are WAY sexier. ;-)
  • BTW, you originally caught my attention because you're the first /.'er I've noticed that is both the friend of a friend and foe of a friend. I thought that was pretty unique until I noted that you have more friends than a lottery winner.

I then browsed your web site and some of your posts and I get it now--you're that mythical "chick that gets it." I need one of your kind, please take me to your leader.

I am going on a vacation at the end of this month and had a similar epiphany to the one you describe in
    • "I thought that was pretty unique until I noted that you have more friends than a lottery winner."

I have 431 fans... but not nearly as many as other people. [slashdot.org] :)

"I am going on a vacation at the end of this month and had a similar epiphany to the one you describe in this journal post--this is the first long and expensive vacation for me that didn't involve meeting a familial obligation of some kind and/or some sort of involvement from same."

      I totally understand -- I've had that "free" realization for a w

Friends, fans, you obviously knew what I meant. :-)

$$$$$exyGal has quite a following, to say the least. I note elsewhere that there is some doubt that $$$$$exyGal is in fact female, I can't imagine anyone having the energy to pull off a hoax that sustained, but who knows?

Thanks for your kind response and for adding me to your friend list.
  • I've had a couple goes at starting my own business... finally went back to finish my degree (done in two weeks, incidentally) and I guess before too long I'll be back at it again.

Great to hear that someone beat the 80%. (Of businesses that don't make it past the first year.)

The cost of feathers has risen, even down is up!
