marcushnk's Journal: More Gentoo :-)

I've spent some BULK time on Gentoo, its chat channel and its forum..
I've learnt more in the last 3 weeks about linux because of Gentoo than I have in the last 5 years using RH and Mandrake.. :-/

Its still not perfect.. I had a perfect system running a kernel on the "gentoo-sources" EXCEPT that it kept locking up randomly.. so i took someone elses advice and built it on the gaming sources (CK kernel), at the same time I also set my ram settings in the bios back to "optimal speed" from "aggressive speed" ( I know, I know.. two changes at once.. BAD /me :-P ).
Its stable now but I can't get the nvaudio module to run on the gaming sources and ALSA just plain sucks arse.. too much CPU overhead and it doesn't handle very noisy enviroments (ie when in a game there is a lot of expolsions/gun fire etc).

So now I'm tempted to go back to the gentoo-sources and see if it was the ram settings that fixed my issue's.. I guess I can test that tonight by changing the settings back and seeing if my new kernel crashes again...

Bulk work going on at the moment.. very busy.. so I'll leave with my latest hairbrained idea..

'm in a strange mood this morning.. and one of those strange thoughts I had was how Kiss's song "I was made for loving you baby" would make a really cool song, if it was re-written (weird Al style) for Lord of the Rings...

[edit] well.. it looks so far like the RAM speed increase WASN'T the reason for the lockups.. and it really was gentoo-sources.. This makes me sad.. cause I wanted to go back to gentoo-sources so i could use the nvaudio module and have decent sound again. :-(
