Journal LinuxParanoid's Journal: User-moderated story queue, late-April 2003 4

If you have a story submission that has been neglected in the second half of April 2003, then reply to this post. I find it easiest to submit stories both here and to the Slashdot queue at the same time. It definitely gets seen here by several people. Heck, post the story in your own journal too, with a link to it if that helps you get greater visibility. If a story makes it onto the main page too, so much the better.

Microsoft apparently settled a Florida class action for $202 million, according to this Register article [theregister.co.uk]. Apparently people who purchased licenses to MS desktop and OS software between Nov 16, 1995, and Dec 31, 2002, for use in the state of Florida can get some vouchers for free hardware/software/etc usable at various suppliers.
  • Wouldn't it be nice if ... one of the Slashboxes on your home page could be a list of user-written Journal entries that were above a certain threshold?

Threshold of what, you ask? Yes, wouldn't it be nice if we could use mod points to mod up (or down) user journal entries? Wouldn't it be nice if they weren't capped at +/- 5? Then, all of the highest modded journal entries of the day would show up in the Slashbox?

Not exactly the same as user-moderated submissions, but it'd be a good compromise, IMHO.

    • I meant to mention this earlier, but I do kinda like this idea. As long as the journal author could opt-out of the moderation anyway. I don't think journal authors should *have* to submit their stuff for moderation if they don't care to.

Now it seems to me that for "highest modded journal entries of the day" to work, one would have to have some vehicle to see all the journal entries of the day. Something for moderators to peruse. I thought I saw something like this early on when messing with journals bu
  • ZDNet has an interview [zdnet.co.uk] with "Windows 2003 kernel guru", Rob Short. Besides revealing some of the technological goals of Win2003, Rob explains what aspects of Linux that the Microsoft kernel guys admire and are trying to emulate. You don't see that everyday, do you?

PURGE COMPLETE.
