That's the proper way.. Downmods should only be applied to spammers, for what that's worth. They're already setting up tons of sockpuppet accounts to screw with the system, and it's getting pretty deep in that department.

You are following what I say I do.. I may not agree with you, but I'll defend your right to say it with my life.
That's not my original statement though. It's a Voltaire quote. It is something good that everyone should live by. You'll never agree with everyone all the time, but it's important to respect their right to express their feelings.
Even with someone that you disagree with, it's usually enough to let them make themselves look like an ass. :)
