Journal PetWolverine's Journal: Server 5

Since I've been operating this server for a while, and it has gone down several times without my having any way of providing an explanation to those who were downloading and lost their connections, I've decided to start making journal entries to warn people of downtime when possible, and to explain it after the fact otherwise.

For those who haven't been visiting my server, take a look.

  • Hey,

First, I would like to say "thank you", but I must ask... "why?" What is motivating you to open up your machine and allow visitors to DL your music?

I don't ask this from any sort of moral/ethical high horse, as I think 97% of the /. population has at one time/is currently downloading[downloaded] media illegally.

Also, what kind of traffic are you seeing? you tend to post pretty often, so your site has high visibility. Do you not get charged for the bandwidth that this can consume?

I am sorry for all the questions, but I am interested in the motivating factors.

    Cheers!

    • Mostly, it's an experiment. My college is putting up the bandwidth, they haven't gotten mad at me (yet) for using up an incredible amount of it, and my computer seems plenty capable of handling the high traffic (the first time I /.ed myself, I woke up the next morning to find that NetMonitor was recording 600k/sec of upstream).

Originally it was just for friends, but I decided there was really no reason not to offer guest access, and then one day I decided to see what would happen if I started advertising on /.. Since then I've just used it as a way of learning about serving for shits and giggles.
      • any requests, i notice you use OS x and have a couple divx movie, i have a lot of "backups" of both, drop a me a line, if you need anything (and yes you can fill up 280gigs MUHAHAHAHA)

An Ada exception is when a routine gets in trouble and says 'Beam me up, Scotty'.

Working...
