New JonesBlog entry on a visit to the Korean DMZ here.

This is a glimpse at an environment that hopefully will be rapidly changing, but with North Korea going through a spasm of Communist retrenching and the uncertainty of Kim Jong Il's health (or even if he is still alive), things in the DMZ appear to be just as tense as they have been for years.

  • I've taken a morbid fascination with North Korea and this whole cult of personality thing with Kim Jong-Il's government.

    You might find this an interesting read/viewing. It's Eric Lafforgue's trip through North Korea [flickr.com]. Lengthy, and many of the photo descriptions are repeats, but it gives what seems to be a very real sense of the razor-thin white wash that is North Korea.

  • As you may have heard, the DMZ _is_ sometimes crossed by the military. My step-son who was stationed in South Korea was a part of a recon mission who attacked a convoy in North Korean territory. I made a hint at it here [slashdot.org], with the footnote.

    Two US soldiers died, and my step-son was hit with two bullets. Thank God for a bullet-proof vest. My step-son's fiance at the time remembers a brief news story that attributed the two deaths to a training accident. One of the soldiers that died took a bullet to his head,

      Yes... I am well aware that there are occasional *issues* inside the DMZ. That is all I can say about that here...

      There are so many stories there that are never going to be documented in the annals of history, it would make your head spin.
