Journal FortKnox's Journal: Anyone having messaging problems? 11

I've had about 40 moderations today, about 50 replies to comments I made throughout the day, and about 4 new journals posted, but its been hours since and I haven't gotten any messages.

Anyone else having issues? (Honestly, unless you are checking the 'journals' link, if everyone's having problems, no one should be replying)

Anyone having messaging problems?

  • I sure didn't get notification of this thread. Got a message for a new journal entry by another friend, though. He is also my fan. That may have something to do with it. Hope they fix it soon.

  • Yeah, it seems to have been slowing down quite a bit over the past couple of days. I just now got a notification of gmhowell's James Coburn journal entry [slashdot.org] early this morning.

    But what do I know, I have 70% no life [slashdot.org]. ;)
  • About 30 seconds ago. So... it's going pretty slow.
  • It definitely has been slow today. It was only when I went to write in my own journal did I notice that three of my friends (and you) had already posted.
  • I've noticed that it's been going rather slow.

Could it be that there is so much going on, that slashdot itself is being, well, slashdotted??

  • I just got 7 messages at once, even though I just reloaded 10 minutes ago. Probably some delay. I don't know if MySQL supports triggers, but for me this felt like a broken trigger.
  • Messages, like email, are queued and it takes an execution of the message-delivery task to actually place specific messages in your "in-box". If things seem slow, it could be anything from this task deliberately being postponed for whatever reason...

...or it could be that slashd just isn't running, hence preventing all tasks from being run.

If I were to guess, I'd say it might have been the latter. Slashd always has a tendency to misbehave, especially if the database is acting flaky.

  • Cliff probably has more insight than any of us, and he's not 100%. But, to add a datum, I got online about 8:45 EDT, and had 22 messages waiting.
  • I've begun to notice that I get messages in groups --- i.e., no messages for a while, and then 10 all at once.

Slash is quite a particular beast.

Those who can, do; those who can't, write. Those who can't write work for the Bell Labs Record.

Working...
