Journal einstein's Journal: X-mas, X-Windows... 10
I have some free time at work, so I thought I'd actually post my first (meaningful) journal entry.
Friends and family are starting to bug me about X-mas presents they should get me, and my feeble list needs some fleshing out, so what do does everyone else have on their lists?
As an aside, I've been trying to turn an old 486 laptop into a good X-terminal so I don't have to keep my noisy gaming machine in my bedroom, but can still run most of the same apps.. Does anyone have a recommendation on a distro I can install via a floppy and fit ssh and X on a 300Mb harddrive? Google has been less than helpful. all the X on a floppy Distros point to dead links. I'd like to try something with Gentoo, but I haven't found how to install from only a floppy, and I don't look forward to compiling on a 486. I have heard rumors about using a chroot environment to compile on a faster box, maybe I'll give that a try...

Speaking of DVDs, I saw that the Reign of Fire DVD is coming out soon.. I sure hope there is a Director's Cut on that thing. The movie looked like it had great potential but too much of the story was left of the cutting room floor by an editor trying to fit all dragon CGI in (and the CGI was worth that price of admission alone! but...) at the price of character development. FoTR is definitely getting added to my list... any particular DVD recommendations?

Seriously, those are some must-have DVDs. Owning The Matrix is required with a DVD player. But seriously, get/ask for what you like. Comedies, dramas, Gladiator, Braveheart, The Terminator, Terminator II, My Cousin Vinny. All very nice escapes.
And on a side note, when you get a DVD, make sure it has good special features. They're half the reason DVDs are so much better than normal videos. Sometimes, the separate commentary can be the best part of the DVD. I don't buy DVDs unless they have at least an audio commentary track.
I now have a decently sized DVD collection, and this is from someone who owned three movies in his life (The X-Files movie, Jurassic Park, and The Usual Suspects) until he bought a DVD player.
