According to this Washington Post article, the nation's craze with ethanol and corn-based bio-fuels is not based on a good analysis. It has recently been shown by a team at the University of Minnesota that prairie grasses would be a more efficient and sustainable source of bio-fuels. It appears that growers and politicians alike have jumped the gun by jumping on corn as a bio-fuel.

  • Here's some similar info from an MIT press release in February [mit.edu]. Probably even better to read the PDF of the tech talk. I've heard for quite a while that what we need is an efficient, cost-effective way to turn these other types of biomass into ethanol -- the theoretical yield being much higher, but the processes haven't been successfully scaled up yet. If one of those crops that grows "whether you want it to or not" (like all the weeds in my garden) could be harnessed, it might be a great boon. Less transpo
