ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A group of reformists from Muslim societies who have become accustomed to death threats upped the ante yesterday with a declaration they hope will spark a popular movement across the Islamic world to "fight back" against fundamentalist interpreters of the faith.

Secularists such as Ibn Warraq, Nonie Darwish and Irshad Manji helped formulate the "St. Petersburg Declaration," which seeks to do no less than eliminate traditional understandings and practices of Islam that conflict with universally accepted human rights.

  • It's probably the wrong people doing it in the wrong place for it to get anywhere. I really doubt many of the folks we'd like to listen to that message are going to get past the name: "Saint Petersberg Declaration"? They want to reach out to moderate islam and compete with radical islam, so they name their declaration after a US city which is named for a Christian saint? WTF were they thinking?

    I think that's going to be about as effective as the Medina Declaration on Catholic Access to Contraception.

  • except that Islam and its founder ACTUALLY DO PREACH HATRED and murder for anyone that does not believe or follow their teachings. The problem isn't radicals.... the problem is the Muslims that actually read the teachings and follow them.
