Journal shepd's Journal: when-u.com BURN IN HELL 5

Oh MAN this pisses me off.

My only windows machine gets infected with this when-u.com spyware crap and even Ad-Aware can't take care of it.

Their text file LIES -- they say it isn't spyware, well, shit, if it walks like a chicken, acts like a chicked, looks like a chicken, it must be so.

If you've been infected by when-u.com's crapware, try the following steps (I'll update if this works once I've rebooted):

Remove this key using regedit:

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\WhenUSave registry key.
Stop "save.exe" process.
Delete "C:\progra~1\save" directory.

Just one more time, when-u.com, FOAD. I will firewall you permanently for the rest of my life on any router/system I ever touch. I hope you go out of business and they DON'T let you chapter 11. I hope the creditors send the repo men to steal your house. In short, piss off forever. I'm now looking for the names of whoever owns your company, because you'll NEVER get a job anywhere I work. Oh, and by the way Sears (any any other company I got ads from with this shitware) you're on my "don't buy from these companies for Christmas presents for the rest of my life" list.

Any why the hell does it take 20MB of memory to stream ads at me? I've seen trained monkeys program better than you guys.

I hope you're happy.

  • I don't have windows, but what program gives you this spyware?
    • My best guess is it was included with BearShare [bearshare.com]...

I suppose I brought it on myself, I mean, I know bearshare comes with spyware, but if you had to deal with these constant popups that AdAware can't clean, and, worse yet, don't even come with an installer, you'd be angry too. :-)

I mean, is an uninstaller for the spyware too much to ask for? You can even bury it in the Add/Remove programs inside the control panel, just make sure it exists...

If only my college were a little less M$ centric, I might not have to deal with this stuff. :-)
  • I made a data image of my drive and burned it to CD-RW. When a new app gets installed, I don't upgrade the image until that app proves itself essential. As soon as I catch this crap going on, I restore from image and reinstall apps and docs as I need them. It takes less time than puzzling out the problem, and you can get PowerQuest's Drive Image or Norton Ghost for US$70.
  • Went to their site (with a secure Mozilla!). Check this [exactadvertising.com] out.

So, did your attempts to remove it succeed?

ACK! I think my eyes are going to melt with the burning rage I have against that company right now! ;-)

      >So, did your attempts to remove it succeed?

It appears so, I've had no more of their popups and their software doesn't appear anywhere anymore.

The funny thing is they have a page on how to remove their software, but because their software is so out of date, it's only valid for windows 95 (too bad their software still loads on NT-alikes though).

      Ho hum.

      I'll update the story shortly.

The best book on programming for the layman is "Alice in Wonderland"; but that's because it's the best book on anything for the layman.
