Journal AriaStar's Journal: Gripes about iPods - mine is no longer the best one 12

Dammit, iPod 80gig. I'm a technology whore. A total whore. Now my 60gig vid is no longer the best. Now I'm going to have to go buy the 80gig and demote my 60gig from being the coolest thing in the world (kinda) to being just an external drive. I may be a girl, but toys are to me what diamonds are to whoever it is who likes diamonds. Oh, double dammit, the 80gig is less than I paid for my 60gig.

Gripes about iPods - mine is no longer the best one

  • 80GB isn't enough of a jump in capacity for me. I had expected 80GB in last year's models - it took a lot of humming and hah'ing to convince myself to get a black 60GB video iPod because I already had a 60GB iPod photo. Now they've come out with the 80GB model that should have been here last year and I just don't get that feeling about it...

The shuffle looks cool though. I could convince myself to get one of those for podcasts and audiobooks for my daily commute. Then again, it's only 1GB - why not 2GB?
    • It should be more, but won't be. Maybe if there hasn't been a larger jump by Christmas I will buy this. I've got moving expenses first. But that new Shuffle for just $79? I'm pre-prdering that this week, I think. I really don't need it, but want. It's a shiny new toy!

I am pretty much convinced that I need the new shuffle, it is too damn cool. So I will most likely be placing an order tomorrow or Friday.

The 80GB iPod at first glance appears to be no more than a minor bump - marginally bigger HD, brighter screen, better battery - but the firmware looks to be different to the 5G iPods. I've installed the new firmware on my iPod video and the new search menu is not there. Looks like Apple are playing silly buggers with the firmware again - should be no reason to not include
        • I'm wondering if they will put out another at Christmas. Get people to buy this one, then whatever comes out in December. This is the biggest thing stopping me from jumping in right now, that and stuff re: my mother.

Apple have been known for releasing cool stuff in two batches. IIRC, the 5G iPod video was expected at the September 2005 event, but that event only showed the nano and Motorolla's ROKR phone. The iPod with video was launched about a month later. However, with the iPod getting a revision this time around, I doubt that they would be releasing a new iPod model any time soon.

I placed my pre-order for the new shuffle today. Now the wait for Apple to actually release the darn thing begins...
            • That new Shuffle is spiff, as I once would say. Now it's just pretty bad-ass.

If you think they're not likely to release a new one soon, I may get it sooner than Christmas afterall. Some of the comparisons I've been seeing make it seem like the 80gig is actually a good deal better due to software, etc..

Apple have another special event scheduled for the 24th or 25th of this month, but that is most likely going to be a new version of Aperture and photography related products. I really can't see them releasing yet another new iPod range after revving the three current ranges, but maybe wait at least two weeks to be sure. Apple can be tricksy little beggars at times...

As far as the differences with the 80GB model, the firmware is different in at least one aspect - the new iPods have a search feature which the
    • I haven't got one yet.. too many other considerations first, unfortunately :-(
Perhaps when I have a 1/2 hour to 3/4 hour travel time every day.
      • With my car screwed up, I am spending about 4-5 hours per day on public transit. My iPod helps me keep sane. And, being in Apple-land, it's look odd for me not to have one.
        • This will probably be my answer in the future as well. The moment I need to spend an hour each way on the bus every day is the time I buy an iPod. Then again, it may be easier just to load up the macbook with some shows and catch up on some things I've been putting off for a while.

I was considering getting an iPod for the walk to work (20ish minutes) but had to put it off due to monetary concerns. Need lots of cash quickly at the moment.
