Journal KshGoddess's Journal: Jason Mraz

So last night, we went to see Jason Mraz (and his band) at the Pike's Peak Center. We obviously were seated in front of the howler monkeys, as the girls behind us shrieked at every opportunity. One of them I thought was going to pass out, she was hyperventilating at every song he played. Well, duh he's playing a song, that's WHAT YOU BOUGHT THE TICKET TO SEE. Had he been stripping or doing interpretive dance, I'd have been worried.

It was just him and his band. The first half of the show was Jason, his bassist, keyboardist, and a guy on an african drum (with cymbals? I don't know the right word for them... they were on a stand and 2 of them and made a crashing sound -- usually seen in a drum kit). The music was clear, and they were definitely enjoying themselves. The bass guitar seemed strange to me. It was bigger (both wider in the body and slightly longer in the neck) than I was used to seeing. But it was made of a beautiful piece of wood, and looked like it had a 'hole' or 'speaker' in the body near the top. I'm sure you musicy people would know what I was talking about if you saw it.

Anyway, in addition to playing guitar on most of his songs, Jason Mraz has a lovely falsetto, and (to my ear) a great bit of control over it. He was dressed 'simply', in ripped jeans (mmmm...) and a t-shirt, and a pimp hat. :D

There was intermission, I lined up for the ladies' room (and towered over the rest of the line), and then back to my seat next to Benny. The second 'half' of the show (as it was twice as long as the first bit), either the girls behind me had blown out the top range of my hearing, or the sound was muddier. They added a drum kit. They added another guitarist. And a couple songs had both a trumpet and a tenor sax.

There's something about musicians enjoying themselves on stage that's uplifting to me. And when they all jammed during a couple of songs, you could tell they were having fun.

The night ended with an encore, where he sang his 'hit' (Geek in the Pink), and danced like a young, sober, geeky, skinny, white James Brown. It was adorably cute and a little sexy. He sang another song that I can't remember for the final finale... I'll have to see if itunes can assist me later.

All in all, an enjoyable evening. Now, if only I could find a musical around here that I wanted to see...

The opossum is a very sophisticated animal. It doesn't even get up until 5 or 6 PM.
