Journal subgeek's Journal: please help with website photo gallery software 10

the dojo where i train is looking to get the photo gallery going on the website. a friend of the owner administers the site. he is pretty fair, but short on time, so we're hoping to get something going that would let us upload picks through a web interface, so he'd only have to set something up once.

i've heard of plogger and gallery, but haven't used them. are there any particular advantages/disadvantages to using either of these open source programs? are there other open source solutions out there that are better than either one? do they all suck compared to something else that we should buy? if anyone has experience with any of this, your advice is appreciated.

  • I tarball the images and thumbs and scp it to my site. Then extract them using a php script. It's home cooked and has a lot of rough edges. A config file has to be edited. PHP script is used to create a mysql entry with a category and page counter.

Maybe one day I'll have it user friendly enough to submit to sourceforge. Gallery top [icunphotos.com].

  • You can use the flickr API to generate a photo album on your site using the pictures on flickr. I haven't played around with it myself, but this site shows a little of what can be done with it: http://webdev.yuan.cc/famaker.php [webdev.yuan.cc]

With a little time and code, you could query for all the tags or sets for your user ID and display each as a separate album on the site. Once you're able to build that data dynamically, you just have to maintain the flickr site which has some great tools for doing just that. I've
    • i will not be the main person putting pictures up, so this is the dealbreaker:

For the time being, the user interface is still not friendly yet, but it does work.

our head instructor has a lot of MA knowledge. computers are a totally different thing. he needs anything on the computer to be simple and straight forward. also, server space and traffic isn't a problem at this point. and honestly, i'm too lazy to roll my own and tired of configuring things when there is already a perfectly good tool to do it f
      • Oh, I wasn't suggesting to actually use that interface for the album, just as an example of what can be done. Making a custom album from your site would be the better thing to do. However, I understand you have no time for that, so maybe there's another tool out there that will do exactly what I described. I just haven't looked for it personally.

My main reason for suggesting flickr is the ease of use. The server space and traffic going to another site is just a bonus in my mind.
  • I've been using gallery for years. Very easy to administer. Lots of extra functionality. Can upload via a web form, a java app, and a couple of other ways. I might consider Frappr, but who knows when/if they will change their fees. I never even considered it, as I've got a ton of stuff already in gallery.

Honestly, I think any of them are fairly equivalent. We aren't talking rocket science here.

  • for my personal site, I use Coppermine Photo Gallery [coppermine-gallery.net]. It's open and uses php/mysql. I've never used any other, so it could be the worst ever and I just don't know better, but I've found it to be easy to use and pretty flexible.
  • My roommate uses gallery to run his site and it seems to cover all the bases very well. Updates are frequent enough that you won't feel behind on security issues (Which are few to begine with). It has user groups for controlled access, nested albums, loads and loads of other features. If you want to see a Gallery site working then head to altreephotography.net and see what ours looks like.

It's later than you think, the joint Russian-American space mission has already begun.
