Journal blazin's Journal: Ask a subset of /. 23

Since I am not sure anyone actually reads this journal any more, I'll try once again to get someone to comment on something.

I recently ran across (recently as in less than 10 minutes ago) this movie site while looking through del.icio.us at work because there's nothing to do.

Anyway, there's one video I found of one of the players in the game saying that there's a misconception that quadriplegics can't move their arms. My understanding was that it was paraplegics who can move their arms and quadriplegics are paralyzed from the neck down. I took at the google dictionary link for both paraplegic and quadriplegic and it seems to agree with what I thought.

My question is, is there some case or circumstance where the guy in the video (who is seen cruising in the Murderball chair, palming and throwing a volleyball) would be considered a quadriplegic? Has the designation of level of paralysis changed?

    Q. Your piece about the Sundance Audience Award winner "Murderball" -- and every other review I've read -- refers to the players as "quadriplegics." They sure look like paraplegics to me.

    A. Quadriplegia does not mean, as many believe, that all movement has been lost in all four limbs. The "quad" in quadriplegia refers to the fact that all four limbs have been affected by some degree of paralysis, resulting from a spinal cord injury between the first to seventh

    • Thank you for that. I saw the dictionary definitions and the first two were basically "complete paralysis of all four limbs". The third one might leave some wiggle room. The reason I'd asked is that I have known paraplegics and quadriplegics for most of my life. The quadriplegic I know paints amazing pictures, but it is using his mouth. I think he has a muscle or two at the top of one shoulder that gives him a very slight amount of movement for one arm but not a lot.
  • I'm not sure about the answers you seek, except to say that I DO read your journal.

Now, having said that....did you know that yesterday was free slurpee day at 7/11? I'm wondering how many free 7.11oz slurpees you managed to guzzle down in one day? ;-)

    • I didn't know yesterday was free slurpy day. Nobody told me. So I guzzled none. But I would have grabbed at least one or two had I know. But nobody told me.

I think Sielwolf found the answers I seek.
    • I drank 42. And I'm posting this from the bathroom, where I've been ever since. (I can't really back that up.)
    • Since the question has been answered above by citing a FAQ, I just wanted to chime in that I still read your journal. :-) I still read NeeNee3s too, but most of the time, I don't have time to reply. Currently I'm burning a batch of 20 identical CD's (no, not warez... pictures and it's not pr0n), so I amply have time.
      • I would like to chime in and strenuously deny the persistent and slanderous rumors that I read this journal.

We now return you to your scheduled seal clubbing.

        Cheers,

        Ethelred

        • I always knew that you hung out in seal clubs! The penguin underground will be all over you for this one.
        • if ethelred needs an alibi, i'll be the first to say he couldn't have been reading this journal, as he and i were busy training for the next transatlantic spelling bee. we haven't had time to read this journal since the vigorous training began several weeks ago.

  • Yes I do. :)
  • that guy appears to be palming the ball, not because he has any gripping strength, but because the game is played with stick-em on a fingerless glove.

(just like the regular ask /. questions, about 5 minutes browsing the site would have yielded the answer.)
    • Really? Cuz I spent at least 15 minutes on the site clicking the links, watching the videos, going to the MTV site linked from there, etc. I just went back and I still don't see the link from the movie site to the link that sielfwolf posted.

I did see about the stick-em, but the guy is still throwing the ball which is much more than I'd expect someone categorized as a quadriplegic to be able to do. Hence the question.

Also, unlike normal ask /. questions, I put in that I had tried to find the answer myse
      • sorry for being too harsh. i hadn't heard of this sport before, and it was a very interesting website. i especially liked the player interviews where each one talked about annoying things people do or say about their handicap.
        • No problem. Sorry for jumping back. I'm very annoyed by people that ask questions when it's obvious they've done nothing to figure out the answer on their own.

That being said, I've apparently missed more of the website. I didn't see a part with player interviews (unless you mean in the movie trailer) and I still don't know where the link was that sielwolf sent on.

Are you looking at the flash or html version of the site?

Good day to avoid cops. Crawl to work.
