Journal Elwood P Dowd's Journal: Isn't there an extremely adaptable wireless product? 6

I remember reading about some group releasing firmware for some WAP device that enabled huge new functionality, like perhaps traffic shaping or packet inspection or something. I forget which chipset and I forget the project's name.

If I can't figure out what product that was, I'm just looking for a good DSL router/802.11g WAP with WDS and a web interface.

Edit: Bought a Linksys WRT54G.

Isn't there an extremely adaptable wireless product?

  • ...is probably what you're looking for. Lots of groups have released replacement firmware for it.
    • Yeah it is. Thanks.
      • Be careful when buying rock-bottom networking equipment. The industry's going through a real uh.. rocky period...

        Past month:

Linksys WET11 Wifi -> Ethernet Bridge: acted funky, wouldn't connect.

D-Link DWL-G810 Wifi -> Ethernet Bridge: acted funky, died 3 days in to ownership; firmware flash no go.

Netgear WGR614 WAPg/100baseT Router: Overheats constantly in hot weather, requires reboots.
        • Thank you for your sig, which brought me back to one of my all-time favorite /. posts.
          • Yeah, that's pretty much why it's remained my .sig for the last 6 months. And I'm a pretty .sig-fickle pig tickle. Still makes me laugh when I clickthrough ;D
    • Ah, I was looking for that also.

I want to provide a wireless network for my neighborhood through my DSL connection, but I want to limit the speed of each connection so that it doesn't suck up all my bandwidth.

Is this the sort of thing that some of the replacement firmware allows? Looks like OpenWrt [openwrt.org] may let me do this...
