A Linux Distro For HP's Jornada 720? 5

TrekCycling writes: "I want to get in on the portable Linux action and I was wondering if anyone knew of the availability of a distribution for the HP Jornada 720. As many may know, this is a CE device with a similar configuration (but it's an HPC instead of a Pocket PC) as the iPaq. I'd like to run Linux on it just to become more familiar with. I use it at home for Java development, but I'd like to be able to pack it around with me. I've also looked online and haven't turned up anything positive, but that doesn't mean that something isn't brewing."

    where to start (-;

    the 720 if I recall is a StrongARM powered ( info on devices http://arm.sourceforge.net [sourceforge.net] )

    now yes you can get netBSD 1.5.1 for it but you have to do some hacking but there is a step by step guide somewhere

    linux wise you can get the source for the kernel @ http://www.arm.linux.org.uk [linux.org.uk] Mr R. King has done alot of work so say thank you to him (dont pester him he wont answer just join the mailing list )

    you can also get the familar project up and running from http://www.handhelds.org [slashdot.org]

    Debian is achived by http://intimate.handhelds.org/develstructure.shtml [handhelds.org] so apt into it (-;

    have fun

    1. what CPU does it use, is it supported by linux?
    2. What sort of graphics hardware does it have, is there an X server that supports it?
    3. What do you want to do with it? X, console? Do you want to use it as an address book and calendar?
    4. You mentioned something about java, is there a jdk that will run on its cpu?
    5. How is the OS stored on it, flash, or is it designed to be non-upgradable?
    6. How does it connect to another computer for data transfer, A serial port? Is it a standard serial port, or a custom proprietary port?
    If you look at all those things and it look slik elinux should run on itc spu, adn X should support it, i recomnend either modifying one of the distributions for ipaq(check out handhelds.org), or rolling your out(check out the linux from scrathc page). If you choose to roll your own, i suggest finding a cross compiler that will run on a pc and building everything there. Also check out if there is an emulator for it, that would make things alot easier if you decide to roll your own. And if you do get it working, make a web page about it, and submit it to slashdot, im sure lots of people would be interested in anothe rPDA that can run linux.
  • I am really wanting to get any *BSD or Linux for the 548 Jornada, since I think the worst part about PocketPCs is the interface, and one small step towards fixing that would be moving to an OS platform that already has organizer software that would be more easily customized. WinCE is total garbage .. I'm glad I didn't see the older version that this is supposed to be a 'huge improvement' over, because I am vastly underwhelmed.

  • Thanks very much for the UNIX utility info! That provides at least some UNIX-type functionality for the Jornada 720, which is a great little machine by the way.

    I'll be sure to try it out!

    I don't know about Linux, but there is active development of NetBSD (NetBSD/hpcarm) that runs on Jornada 720. I have not tried it, though, so I'm not sure of the current status. Here is the web page: www.netbsd.org/Ports/hpcarm [netbsd.org]

    There is also a guy (in Germany I think) named Keuchel Rainer that has ported lots of UNIX-type tools to Windows CE (focusing on Jornada 720). This includes many command line tools such as tar, telnet, gzip, rsh, etc.. plus Perl (!) and an X Server (!!). Perl seems to work well, but aparently thare are a few limitations due to the WinCE operating system, but I have not had any problems yet, probably because I still a newbie when it comes to Perl :-) The X server also works well (although a little slow) and includes some ported X apps, such as twm, xeyes, xedit, xcalc, and xpdf. I have not yet tried it with remote X apps, but i'm sure it works. He has also ported emacs to CE! Check it out: www.rainer-keuchel.de [rainer-keuchel.de] Click on Software at the bottom.

    There is also a Yahoo! winCE dev group (started by Mr. Rainer: groups.yahoo.com/group/wince-devel [yahoo.com]

    If you find out about a Linux port, post it! :-)

There are two ways to write error-free programs; only the third one works.
