Comment xv image browser update? (Score 1) 127

If only we could get a tasteful update to John Bradley's xv, still the best image browser ever.

It really doesn't even need much. Modern linux build compatibility, 64bit, multi-threading performance improvements, support for more image formats (and raw), improved image processing filter quality, maybe some modular support for tagging.

Comment Nikon ended third party repairs in 2020 (Score 4, Informative) 111

In March 2020 Nikon stopped supplying the network of authorized repair facilities with parts. Nikon corporate is now the only option, often at much greater cost and time.

In contrast, Canon is very good about supplying parts to both repair shops and even to individuals.

Though I still own some Nikon classics - F, F2, FM - this action has left Nikon dead to me.

Comment Spectrum internet - constant outages (Score 1) 56

Every day during the past week, my Spectrum/Charter internet has had frequent total outages during the day and night. It is on-going today.

Some of the network outages are more local, others appear to be on the Time Warner backbone (TW and Charter merged in 2017). I log reachability and performance.

Repeated attempts to contact tech support have been pointless. The reported hold times are 30 to 55 minutes (day and night). The option to "have us call you back" is no longer offered. They suggest calling back later in the week, and offer an excuse - a "free distance learning offer".

Submission + - Google Voice ends transcripts of voicemails via text message

freelunch writes: Google Voice has announced via email that they are ending one of their most popular features — sending transcripts of voice mails via text message. The cited reason is carrier message blocking. From the email:

This week, we will stop supporting the “Get voicemail via message” feature in Google Voice, which allows you to forward voicemail transcripts to your phone’s texting/SMS app. It has come to our attention that certain carriers are blocking the delivery of these messages because they are automated and, at times, contain transcripts that resulted from unsolicited robocalls. We can no longer ensure these messages will be delivered, so unfortunately we are turning down the feature. We have been slowly rolling out these changes and expect them to be fully deployed by 9 August 2019. No action is needed on your part. However, the Get voicemail via email continues to be supported. As an alternative, the Google Voice iOS, Android and web apps can always be used to check voicemail and view transcripts.
