The problem is that Sony (or any game hardware manfacturer) doesn't make any money on the hardware to begin with. All of the systems are sold as a loss leader at some point, in order to get a piece of the market. Once entrenched, they enjoy the huge markup that is made off of software. And every console manufacturer has some "seal of approval" licensing program that ensures that they get a piece of all software sales, even if a third party developer writes it.

Why would they want to give this up?

I don't disagree with you, I enjoy tinering with my platforms, and am devling into the guts of my Dreamcast as we speak. But you're going to have a hard time convincing any game console manufacturer to buck the trend, and as they see it, hurt their precious software business.
