Journal Journal: Tonight... Tonight...
Tonight, Tonight.
Ahh... This is always tiring. Here I am, setting up my mom's new Windows 2000 server at 1:18 AM PST on 19.08.2001.
I've just finished doing all of the basic setup parts (Formatting SCSI RAID5 storage system, partitioning, installing OS, installing drivers...), and now I'm doing the specific site-setup configurations. IP addresses, services, naming... that sort of thing.
Anyway, I'm going on reboot #5 so far in the setup. I have yet to install Microsoft Exchange, setup up the users/profiles, and restore the primary data from the backups--not to mention install W2K SP2 (Windows 2000 Service Pack 2).
Hmm... I suppose I should let you know what this system is that I'm installing all of this stuff onto:
Motherboard: TYAN Thunder K7 (S2462) with dual onboard network and onboard video (Rage XL
Processors: Dual Athlon MP 1.2GHz w/ GlobalWin CAK38 heatsinks (solid copper with 37CFM fan).
RAM: Half Gig of PC2100 DDR Ram.
Storage: 36GB of RAID-5 in the form of triple Seagate Barracuda SCSI Drives, each at 7200 RPM. This system will boot happily with a hole in on of the drives.
Case: Antec File Server Case (SX1030?).
Power Supply: 460W. 'Nuff said.
Anyway... It's been spending the last 5 minutes booting up. After you set up Active Directory in Win2K Server, the boot time takes a boot to the nuts.
It's still booting.
Score: -1, Offtopic:
Why, you might ask, am I setting up this server at 1AM on a Sunday morning? Because on Monday morning, I'm leaving Vancouver--my place of residence for 17 years (I am 17)--for good. I'm going to Washington State University, or WSU ("Whazzoo"), in Pullman.
I can't believe I'm leaving home. It seems so weird. It seems like yesterday--scratch that. What the hell am I THINKING!? God, I wanna get out of this town!
Did you know that Portland, OR is home of the only 45MPH non-construction speed limit on I-5 within a 200-mile radius? Did you know that those damn terwilliger curves are damn-near one of a kind in unsafeness? Did you know that Vancouver has one of the longest construction zones ON I-5? Well, I'm very sure that those are all true.
This little town isn't a city. Yeah, it's got movie theatre's and stuff, but the last time they were sold out in a movie was Star Wars. Opening day, they still had tickets available. This is the sort of place that, if you go walking around with a "Got DeCSS?" T-Shirt, the only place you'll get a response is in the CS wing of the community college. It is rather pathetic.
Anyway, this town is quite anti-geek it seems. I was lucky to get cable, which they have recently capped the upload speed of to 16KB/sec. My only other option was $150/month for 18KB/sec up/down.
I'm tired... perhaps I'll write more tomorrow
(Note: I was having internet access setup troubles last night. Posted it today)
