Journal Journal: Work on my box needed 8

Well, The following is what I need done for my home box:
  • Upgrade from 4.4-RELEASE to 4.6-RELEASE. This might fix some things listed below, but I won't know till I try it.
  • Get the color printer HP-932C to prinnt *in color*. The PCL3 ghostscript driver is so far only printing in Black & White (and my new Brother HL-1440 will do that faster and better)
  • Get the system to recognize my scanner, a Microtek VL-310
  • Get WINE working -- I want to be able to use my software to learn Russian!
  • Install OpenOffice, and also get KOffice to compile.
  • Get the whole cdrecord package working; mkisofs seems to work now, but the addition of the other tools would be nice. This is not a real high priority, however, since burncd works quite reliably.
  • I really need to get a UPS. And then get the UPS software to work.
  • Install a few of the community building systems, like Slashcode, Zope, or PHP-Nuke on the system; I'd like to build a site for corvid advocacy and aviculture. (My contibution to the crows@yahoogroups list). I will test out the various codes and see which works best. (Of course, I'll need DSL first, but getting and installing the community portal code will take a while, during which time I can talk to housemates about DSL in lieu of Comcast cable).
  • I'd like to get GPG work as well, so I can sign my email and also verify signatures/decrypt messages I get. Oh, and randomly encrypt messages to those I know who can read them ... just for the heck of it!
  • I want to develop the following code:
    • I want to write a Perl-based <XML> schema bulider. I'll use this to build the Schema for the writer's toolkit (see next).
    • I really want to get my <XML> based fiction writer's toolkit working; this is not really directly related to work on my box, but I will use my box to develop it.
    • Likewise, I want to develop the 'Perl Chat' client, which will let me use the full power of Perl in my MUCK/MUSH/IRC etc sessions.

There will be more to come. (And notes when I add to my livejournal (for personal matters), or my K5 journal (for volunteer efforts)).

Journal Journal: My introduction 5

Hello,

This is just a short introductory post, and to explain what I intend to do with the journal. I'm a techie (work at an ISP security department), so I am interested in tech issues as well as a *lot* of other stuff. So I'll be posting the tech stuff I want to journal here, and everything else in my live journal ( http://www.livejournal.com/~blackfeather ).

My personal interests include: anthropology, music, spirituality, science fiction, art, furry fandom/lifestyle, native societies, and a whole lot more.

As for technical issues, I'm a FreeBSD user (I run 4.4-STABLE with KDE 3.0 X Windows desktop), and code in Perl at work. I work in the customer security department of an ISP.

My only tech issues here are about this ./ Journal: I'd like to see two things, and have one question:

  • A way to mark on the subject lines, a moderation of sorts, of comments on the journal entries. A user would always be a moderator for his/her own journal.
  • A friends list, much like LiveJournal.
  • And one question: can I 'deep link' to my journal entries, so I can post that in my LiveJournal when I write in it?

My livejournal's not been updated in a while, though. :(
