Out of interest, I tried to create an account. Way too confusing. Apparently, you must join a 'pod'. What is a pod, what are the differences between Pod A and Pod B, do I have to join the same Pod as my known friends, can I contact people in other Pods? Dunno

A pod is a diaspora server. Pod A and Pod B are like different email servers, say gmail.com and yahoo.com. Account in any one pod is sufficient to contact anyone having account in any other pod (like you can email someone on yahoo from your gmail id).

onlinegroups.net used to be free, but they have become paid hosting recently. I liked their software, Group Server. It has very nice archives and web interface. You can install it on a server too. It is Free/Libre Software. Other two options are freelists.org and librelist.com.

1. Make resource allocation more efficient. For example, there is a concept of basic items like rice, wheat etc... being sold subsidized to poor people. That mechanism is very inefficient and red tape laden presently.The ID is supposed to streamline it .

2. Currently there is no concept credit history in India other than a credit card. There is no way a dealer would sell you a TV on credit unless you bring somebody known the dealer along with you.

Imagine US without SSN. That is what it is now in India. very inefficient.

I see that as a feature of Indian economy. As opposed to credit driven US economy, savings are encouraged and is the normal way in India. Though, I agree people here also started living on credits, but I don't think that is something to be encouraged.
