Terrorism killed the DMCA buzz.
Seriously, I know we all gotta worry and watch on the events over in the Middle East and all that has to do with this "war". But, it takes your mind off other things.
On the morning of September 11th I was at my grandmother's store setting up her new server before the store opened in a few hours. She was on the phone with someone higher up in the company, which is stationed in New York City. The woman on the phone (I never caught her name) told us about the planes as they struck the buildings. At first, it barely struck me.
Of course, it didn't take long to sink in and I was horrified. I couldn't believe the lives that must have been lost. It was horrible, but you knew that.
However, even in the midst of that, I kept my head on straight, sat down, and asked myself "How will this affect things in my interests?" as is human nature to wonder. The frist thing I thought of was losing basic rights. Obviously, the government would take advantage of this to get more control over our lives and take away our rights, even if it was in the interest of "national security". Now, look what is happening.
Of those rights, my main concern was the DMCA. I knew hardly anyone would care anymore. Some people might just say, "You insensitive, jerk! Don't you care about the attackes?!". And I reply, "Yes, of course. But, never care about only one thing!" We have to keep a wide range of topics in focus. We can't just worry about the war while freedoms slip away. And, we can't just bitch about freedom while America is invaded by enemies.
