Journal Journal: gnuzip is now Rikus

Well, I've decided to change my username from gnuzip to Rikus. Nicknames may change over time, but you can hardly go wrong with your name. I'm lucky to have a rather unusual name, which was not taken. This brings my ID up to 765448.

Journal Journal: posting comments

Well, I've decided to finally start posting comments (a few days ago, that is). I'm sure I'll piss off a lot of people, but I might accidentally post something useful too. Hopefully I'll think before I type.

Operating Systems

Journal Journal: FreeBSD

Well, FreeBSD has certainly proved worthwhile. I now hawe two with 4.9-STABLE (haven't tried anything else yet). I'm wondering why I didn't start using it sooner.

User Journal

Journal Journal: Neglected journal (completely)

Okay, so I haven't written in my journal since my first entry. Since then, I have increased my supply of computers to around 21, and I now have multiple computers running Slackware linux, FreeBSD, and NetBSD. My main computers are now the same Gateway E-3200 (FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE), an HP Pavilion 8160 (Slackware 9.0 + Linux 2.6.0), and a Gateway E-300 (HP Pavilion 8650? motherboard), with the E-3200's old hard drive and slackware. These computers' respective cpu MHz are 450, 233, 533. I have lots of storage space now (a grand total of about 360GB), and nfs is proving quite helpful. I think FreeBSD may become my OS of choice for most computers, unless I decide I like NetBSD better.
Hardware

Journal Journal: Linux Box

Well, I just got my linux box (Gateway E-3200 / RedHat 9) set back up, a day or so after a very annoying hard drive failure, which occurred not more than a couple days after I got the computer (used). The hard drive continued to make "click click, chur chur chur chur" sounds, and the system slowed to a near-halt... Then the device disappeared from the BIOS, and I was pissed. Luckily, I hadn't stored anything of value on it yet. The failed drive was: yep, an IBM DeskStar (13 GB). Anyway, now I have a Quantum Fireball (4 GB) which I took from my PowerMac G3, and so far it's working fine.
