So, to begin :) I used Windows 98 and ME for quite some time (oh, about a year) and got used to random crashes, missing DLL files and other unusual annoying things associated with Microsoft's product line. One day I said "Enough with this bull !" and switched to GNU/Linux. My first attempt was unsuccesful however (for I tried to install Red Hat 5.2 on a stock IBM Aptiva with such wonders as WinModem and onboard SiS video card, not to mention ESS onboard sound). So two months later, I got a hold of Mandrake 7.2 form a British Linux magazine. All went well and I also brought a new winmodem (Lucent no less, they actually have drivers for these things). A few days later I was surfin' the net with Netscape and happily learned to use 'tar xfvz source.tar.gz && ./configure && make && make install' as well as rpm -ivh package.rpm without much trouble. And then again it hit me. The major annoyance anybody has with Linux: inconsistent folder tree along all different distributions. Also RPM dependacy hell (and the fact that updating glibc would breake my system no matter what). Went to the store and got FreeBSD 4.6.2 CD (try to get em' on dial-up and not go crazy). Ran cvsup on source and ports collections, rebuilt sources and world. The only thing that is missing is onboard AC97 support for my mother board (not that I care now, I'm getting a new one). Now I wonder what would be the next OS I'll try ;)
