Journal Journal: Screwy stuff (misc)

I'm upset because my e-mail provider just sent me 2 e-mails telling me they're going to stop service because other customers have complained about spam they've received from me. There's an attachment "with additional information" and a password to access it, but I won't open this attachment because I'm worried it may contain a virus. So...it could happen that my e-mail account will be shut down for good. Then, all hell will break loose, since there's a good many commercial entities that notif

Journal Journal: Walmart and Human Trafficking

I'm going to attend a 3-day Human Trafficking Conference starting this afternoon. From what I understand (and I'll see whether it's confirmed at this conference), Wal-Mart is the largest commercial enterprise profiting from this exploitation. This company turned a blind eye to this crime and by so doing, made quite a bit of money subcontracting janitorial work from human traffickers. But...I could be wrong. It could be the California commercial farmers... The other day, I saw a commercial (da

Journal Journal: Missed a Jury Trial 1

I did something today that I haven't done in the many years I've practiced law--- I missed a jury trial. Yep -- that's right -- I got a call from the court coordinator asking me why I wasn't there. (Obviously, the date was never put in my calendar.) What should one do? Run to the courthouse to apologize to everyone? First of all, I couldn't go over there because I carpooled into work. Even if I made it over there, I didn't have my clients with me, so I couldn't announce "ready" and get a d

Journal Journal: What Happened at School Today

My laptop wasn't working properly today, so I was "winging" it in the ConLaw class I teach. Since we're discussing censorship and controversial speech, I asked how many people saw The Passion of the Christ yesterday. I was pretty surprised to see about 6 students raise their hands. Every one of them felt the film was excellent, well-done, a cinematic success, not anti-Semitic...and I guess they're all very happy to support Crazy Mel's ultra-conservative Catholicism. What got me, though, when

Journal Journal: My holiday spirit ruined

I started out the weekend in a fine mood --- stringing popcorn, singing along with Nat King Cole, gazing reflectively into the fireplace --- when I decided I needed to see a recently-acquired DVD: Uncovered: The Truth About the War in Iraq. Completely ruined my weekend. I started thinking subversive thoughts -- thoughts about what I can do to make sure this Administration never sees another term in office. Thoughts about the hypocricy of this so-called "Christian" who can easily lie to his c

Okay, I was being pissy about my travel to NY, and yes, I did fall back on the stereotypical complaints that no respectable NYer would think of uttering. My apologies (I'm not trying to dumb down, really -- I'm just not as articulate and intellectual as you may have been led to believe.). How's this: "The worst part of visiting my family is the ride along the Gowanus. What a joke!! They've been workin' on this road for at least 8 years!! It was supposed to be finished in 13, but with the way road construction is done in NY, maybe my gradkids will be of drinking age so they can toast the grand opening of the new highway." (I tried to channel my father just now.)

Journal Journal: Defense of Marriage?

The forward-thinking people at the American Family Association want to collect numbers to present to Congress in support of this amendment. (sort of like the "preemptive-strike" philosophy of the current Administration)from a full frontal (oops) attack by the homosexual community. http://www.afa.net/petitions/marriagepoll.asp Please note, when you vote, how the numbers aren't exactly falling into place the way this organization intended. Merry Christmas, AFA!!

Journal Journal: Deck the Halls 3

I'm getting ready to go to the 'rents for the holidays and I have this "sick to my stomach" feeling that I haven't had since elementary school (oops, wait --- I did have a few semesters like that in law school too). All I want for Christmas is some Xanex. (You can sing along if you want...) Living away from NY for so long makes me forget how nasty life can be in Large Apple: subway cars packed with people of varying ripeness; drivers who aim straight for you if you don't get off their turf; s
