Journal Journal: Algorithm::Evolutionary perl cpan module

Could not post comment (!) on Cultured Perl: Genetic Algorithms, The Next Generation
Which really pisses me off. I have emailed pater@slashdot.org about this before and still have a problem...

Algorithm::Evolutionary

It's a library for doing evolutionary computation in Perl. Algorithm::Evolutionary was formerly called OPEAL (hence the name of this site), which is an acronym for Obvious Pearl Evolutionary Algorithm Library; it is about to become an official CPAN distribution (as soon as I figure out how to upload it to PAUSE), that is why I have definitely changed the name.

Journal Journal: Speech Recognition

What about speech recognition? I know we're not at 100% accuracy yet. But even 80-90% is OK if you're talking about ability to work. See the ViaVoice page for info on IBM's ViaVoice package for Windows, OSX, and Linux. I have used the Windows package a little already and the voice recognition is pretty good. I do find myself repeating words and still haven't used all the system commands. (delete, save etc.)Right now it is sort of a novelty item. I got the Plantronics dsp-500 usb headset which rocks. It cam with a speech recognition package also. I thought I'd check out the IBM as I've read it is slightly better.

Journal Journal: Google Labs, New Services

Google Labs has a few new services up, Google Glossary provides definitions of words. Google Sets Continues a sequence of items, thus linux + reliable + administration returns a link to Open Source among more than a dozen.
Google Keyboard Shortcuts explains navigating search results without a mouse. Lastly Google Voice allows you to speak a query and view results in your browser. This would be extremely handy on PDA and other wireless net devices.

Journal Journal: ERP Platform SAP Target of Virus

News bytes has this story Another Computing Platform Gets Its First Virus, from last week on a new virus targeting the ERP platform of SAP. The virus written in the Just In Time compilation language ABAP is capable of spreading to other programs in the system. Since all programs are stored as source, the entire system is vulnerable. The story mentions "An ABAP program can do anything in the SAP system, including modifying data and leaving no trace," said Hein, who noted that a line of programming comments in SAPvir states in Spanish, 'Here the code of destruction or effects of the virus goes.'" Analyst's consider this minor as privileged access is required to plant the code. But a two pronged attack would not be impossible.

Journal Journal: Maya Personal Learning Edition is Out

Alias | Wavefront released Maya Personal Learning Edition yesterday. The web server is swamped, and it would be nice to see some mirrors setup. The learning edition is full featured, but watermarks all content "Learning Edition", also it's not compatible with Maya plugins. But hey it's a learning edition. The website mentions a $5 disk, but it won't be released until March.

Journal Journal: Journal Scrawl

Ah the Journal system. Didn't get around to posting until now. I've submitted 15 stories to Slashdot, but only one made the front page. In the future expect approx. 1-2 stories a month cross posted here.
