Journal Journal: Running joke

  • Current project: Styx
  • So my latest install of Gentoo was mostly finished when somebody in my house turned on a hair dryer and blew the breaker. I have lost track of the number of times I have tried this install. Gentoo takes a little over twelve hours to install from a stage 1 tarball, plus whatever time one spends editing config files. Since I cannot spend my entire day waiting between steps to make the edits, I wrote a script to perform the installation for me. I cannot complain too much about the difficulty in installing Gentoo, as this has allowed me to learn more about the way Portage works than just reading the manual. Also, my install script is slowly evolving from a quick one-shot script to a potentially useful tool. If I ever get it to the point of not being embarrassing, I will make it available for public review.

Journal Journal: First Post

I just used my first batch of mod points and thought I'd try out this journal thingie.

  • I'm switching distributions on one of my computers. The system in question used to be my router/firewall, but right now I'm using some D-link router-in-a-box. I have Slackware on all of my other systems, but I wanted to try out Gentoo. It would probably be done by now, except that the power went out this morning for about ten minutes. Man, I should really get an UPS or twelve. When this thing finishes, I'm going to swap back over from the Dinky-link to a router I can actually configure. Next project will either be setting up BitTorrent on my main machine or playing with NIS.

    or perhaps not
