Journal Journal: Trouble with the girlfriend

My wonderfully beautiful, talented, and equally smart girlfriend kristen is having major issues today. About 3 months ago, we attempted to turn on her computer, and the monitor wasn't reponding. It was as if her vga slot had been damaged and wasn't reading data. When we looked at the slot and it was fine, we proceeded to open up the machine and look at the graphics card, which we then saw was badly burned. Now, 3 months later, she got a new one, and just installed it, and now her computer won't turn on. Did she somehow interfere with the power source? What could have caused this? I personally have no clue, Im waiting on her to tell me what exactly she did to install it, it might be that she just didn't install the software, but if that was the case the conputer would still turn on wouldn't it? I don't know, ill update with more when I know.

Journal Journal: ROP CIS 1

I just finished my project for ROP CIS (Computer Information System), I had to write a report on how I was unique, and paste it with a bunch of pictures. I had fun doing it, I put tux and all this open source propaganda on it, looks pretty cool. I have trouble seeing what this has to do with CIS, but it was cool to do. I guess ill throw the report in here:

For most of my life I have been into computers heavily. I've always had a fascination with how these mindless machines can preform the complicated tasks that we, living breathing multi-cellular creatures cannot. Stemming from the fear of a massive computer take-over of the world, curiosity has grown, and from that illogical fear, I have learned more and more about them. I learned how to type correctly when I was very young, using a program called, "Mario teaches typing" which used the video game character Mario to encourage the student to type, it was played the same way the real Mario game was, except to move, hit blocks, and kill enemies, you had to type the correct keys. Early games like this occupied much of my time, and I was determined to learn more and more about this thing I knew nothing about. I eventually started to question how these games worked, nearing my teenage years, my interest in games was fading and I was reading more white pages, and watching more T.V.. Somewhere along that, I went outside for a couple years, and then returned back to my little haven in front of my monitor. My dad was always a computer buff, and he fed most of my curiosity about computers. Eventually, one night at sizzler, I asked him how programs worked. He tried to explain to me the concepts of a kernel and APIs but most of it blew over my head, so when we got home that night, he gave me a book on the C programming language. I picked some of it up, but didn't quite understand what I was doing yet. It was at this point that I believe I was set apart from most kids my age. Where most kids get their introduction to programming with BASIC, I got it with C, a programming language that adults have trouble with sometimes. Eventually, the concepts in the book started to make sense, and I began to write small, but useful programs. I would show these programs to my dad, and he would marvel and praise me. In the end, he ended up introducing me to Linux, so that I could write my programs in a professional environment. Linux was a very influential thing in my life, once I started understanding Linux, I finally started understanding computers, because I would witness what my computer was doing via the terminal. Things started to click, and while other kids my age were out skateboarding and playing with their friends, I was involved in my own little world. I've been studying computers for a long time, but in all this researching and learning, I have neglected what I should have been learning. I have failed classes, and rarely get A's in anything besides easy classes like PE and art. I took a critical look at this, and with the help of my wonderful and supportive girlfriend Kristen, I have been turning this around. Being that this is my junior year, it would seem to be a little late too turn around, but who knows, I may get lucky. In the future, I want to go to college and successfully graduate, obtain my CISSP, and work in Network Security. This, coincidentally, happens to be what my father did for a living, but had nothing to do with my decision to pursue it as a career (in fact, I didn't even know that is what he did until I told him it was what I wanted to do). Computers are my life, and it will hopefully be a very big part of my adult life. In short, what sets me apart from other people and makes me who I am, is the fascination I have with these mindless machines that I once feared and now have grown to love.

Journal Journal: Finally! Back up! But outdated...

I finally have my DSL hooked up at my grandmas house! It's a great relief, I even hooked up a wireless network so I can get all my machines over there eventually. It's a wonderful fealing to be back up, to see my old computer again (2ghz...compared to the 500mhz laptop i was using..eek), but i've noticed I have fallen behind on my fedora core updates. Hell, theirs 2 new versions! Im still using fedora core 4, and in a few weeks they will release number 6, as too what the changes are, I do not know, as too if the changes are needed, I do not know. All i know is my kernel version is still 2.6.11, so I either need to recompile my kernel or update fedora core. Id like to compile my own kernel, seems like a fun project, but I don't want to wait for it while it happens (i've heard it can take very long and have many problems) So ill probably just update fedora. Im currently downloading netbeans(java IDE), I started it last night when I went back to my friends house (where im staying...no internet) for the night, so it should be done now. I'll get to compile that when I get home today, should be fun! I'll be glad when I can do my java work in an IDE on linux.

Journal Journal: Internet almost back up

For the last few weeks, I've been without internet. I've been living with my friend dwight and his mom, in their house, but havn't been able to find an open AP (and am currently using ndiswrapper, so I do not have rfmon, meaning, the means to crack a wep encrypted AP) so I have thus been without internet. Starting on monday, I will be going over to my grandmas apartment, first setting up her DSL, and then using it and wasting her bandwith as much as I can. I have a Fedora Core 4 desktop sitting under her desk over there, and I plan too upgrade it to FC 5, and then do all the nasty ndiswrapper configurations so I can connect to the brand new wireless router I just obtained for this purpose :-D Speaking of routers, I was at circuit city the other day and saw an 802.11n router, i wonder whats up with that, i thought those wern't comming out until 2008?

Journal Journal: Java class dissolved

Today I learned that my java class is going to be dissolved, because my teacher is going to take an administrative position at the school. This is good for him, but very bad for us. Me and my friend phate are both highly dissapointed by this, but give kudos to our teacher anyway. I jumped through a lot of hoops to get into this class and stay at this school, but in the end its ok. I can always take the class somewhere else.
