Journal Journal: Letter

Today I wrote a nice letter to a newspaper published in my city, The Houston Press. Now the Houston Press is known for being off the wall and reporting what no one else wants to report. So that gave me an idea to write them a letter about the DMCA and inquired why they haven't reported on such an important issue. So hopefully it may spark a thought.

In other news, well there really isn't any other news. Its Friday and I just want to get home.

Journal Journal: Fustration 2

Ok forgive any grammer or spelling errors, Im just speakin my peace atm. Ok I write on a bitty security blog called Eboundary.net, and I try to educate my readers on such horrors of the DMCA,TIA, and so on and so on. Basicly everything that I find that violates free speech and the very flowing exchange of intellectual thought.

But Im fustrated today because I just feel like all my work is in vain, not only my work but every other group thats fighting these laws, these concepts. I work in the legal department of one of the hugest utility companies in the US, and I was conversing with my co-workers,who are very intelligent, about the DMCA, about Theo Da Raadt and OpenBSD's problem. And they looked lost, I mean really lost, but not only that but a so what expression came across their faces.

Seriously in my world I hang out with people who are technically minded and who are basicly geeks, as am I, so my community so to speak is aware of the stupidty of these laws. We know that copyright laws are getting out of hand, we see the dangers. I feel the fustration that great minds and discoveries are being hidden because of the US scare tatics, I fume at the thought of students being sued for millions of dollars, for a big coroporations to have a day in the sun and prove a point.

I was reading an article the other day that sayed that the record industry went down in revunue by 7.2%. Ok I know if that was my 7.2 I would jump up and down and want to sue everyone in sight and blame law breaking students, but really guys 7.2? Thats it, and why attribute that to pricacy? Last time I checked our nation was suffering from a recession. Now the last time I checked that meant the American people spend less money. And most of the music out now of days, doesnt really float my boat, I want old stuff, stuff thats hard to find in record stores, but thats beside the point.

I guess my main beef is the average non tech person needs to be educated. We need to strive our point to the average joe, who only used their PC for ebay, and say hey! the technololcial advances you enjoy are about to go out the window.

The DMCA at this point is discouraging anyone to find flaws in someone elses Intellectual propety, I mean WTF, if this was turned around and a different field of intrest was in question like say the medical field. Hell yeah I want to know if the latest cure me all is going to have me growing a 3rd eye. And the government supports researchers and others to find flaws, same as every other field we are involved in.

I feel as if people who do not understand the need for better security better technologly are making the calls on these laws. The US' latest Cybersecurity Czar just quit, and Im assuming that no one wanted to listen to him and his professional opinion. This is the 2nd Czar that has quit. That should tell us something, it should tell the entire country something but it doesnt.

Why?

Because the world of Cyber anything confuses people, its a different world that most people do not want to explore. They are happy on their AOL, restarting their latest version of Windows for the millionth time. I know not all people are like that, but its scary to think how many are.

I just hope that somehow all the groups who are against these laws ban together not just groups but everyone who cares about the quality of technology. It may be far fetched but I still hope, but till then Ill be posting on my bitty site and informing as many as I can.
