Journal: Thoughts on moderation.

I've been thinking about a couple of ideas that I think would increase the quality of Slashdot posts, and and possibly remove holes left open by the current Slashdot moderation system.

One of the problems that I have with Slashdot is a thought somewhere along the lines of "I wish that there was a rating higher than 5". That is to say, when I set my moderation cutoff to 5, I get a number of well thought out posts, but I also get a number which aren't really all that good. It could be argued that these are overrated, and should be modded down, but perhaps if the truely outstanding posts could be modded higher, I could set my threshhold higher, and I wouldn't have to worry about it.

The second idea that I have is something I've never seen on any blog, and would be really nice. The idea is as follows: before you post, you have the option of sending your message to an editor. Anyone could act as an editor, doing so would help your karma.

The editor would read through what you wrote, critique it, make sure that it was logicly sound, gramaticly correct, that the arguments were backed up, etc.

Then he or she would send the message back to you (I presume that there would be some means of marking up a message or something). Once the message was
