Journal Journal: I Hate People

What a day, what a fucking day. The students at this school piss me off so bad sometimes.

I had a number of teachers call me up on the schools Tech Support line today reporting the internet being rather sluggish.

Considering we use our network only for email and web browsing, and we have a T3 line, there had to be some kind of technical issue. I first called up the MSLN techs to make sure everything was fine on there end, no issues there. I headed down to the server and checked some of the bandwidth usage reports. There were a number of Torrents that had been downloaded to a machine somewhere around the library. Over 20 gigs of downloads. That was nothing. There had been 25 or so uploads of these huge packages and more still going.

I grabbed the mac address of this machine and checked the database to see which box these was all happening on. It was coming from 10.10.155.35 ... lib018. I tried to VNC into the machine and stop close the program. Couldn't connect. Time for a physical inspection.

I head to the library. I shutdown the machine but still hear it running. WTF? So I decide to drop the machine off for the PC Repair class and let them deal with it. I start unplugging cables. But, a PCI slot cover had been removed and a network cable was running into the slot and a power cable running out. I unplug those and take it back to my office and remove the side panel. Some fuck head had actually put a Shuttle PC INSIDE the box, removed the NIC from the machine and placed it in the shuttle, and made it look like, through the network at least, a school machine. I see why he did this though, all the machines have Deep Freeze installed and MSLN requires you to register each machines mac address before you can access the net through them. Had to be a student in both the PC Repair class (to make it seem like he had a reason to be ripping apart the machine) and Cisco Academy (to have the accounts pass).

Well, good news though, school policy allowed me confiscate the shuttle and if it's not claimed within 30 days it gets tossed. The schools trash is open territory for staff :-). I doubt the student will claim it, immediate closure of his account, being removed from the Cisco Academy classes, and suspension? I don't think so. It was the Cisco admin account that was logged on, an account we setup for the Cisco students to try certain things with. I find this student and I swear to Christ I will behead him for disrespecting my network like that, but first I'll pat him on the back for his genius idea. Gotta admit, he is a smart shit
