Journal Journal: Projects are better left imagined

Heh, this will probably be another chalk mark in my 'Wanna do it but real life keeps getting in the way' column in life. My best friend wants to start work on a followup to Savage: Battle of Newerth by programming/creating Savage 2. Apparently he has a bunch of ideas concerning Savage that would make a good sequel, and frankly, they would. Though he was a bit lacking insofar as actual content to create a new-gen Savage.

So my thought, create Savage in a post-appocolyptic Newerth, where humankind has been ravaged by the Beasts. More or less take modern day, strip Humans of all that they hold dear, and place a buncha maps in a post-nuclear war setting. Why not? Should be fun to model and work on.

The original idea was a UT2004 mod, but the more I think about it, the more I want to use an existing 3D engine. At the moment, I'm leaning towards Ogre3D, and I think that will work nicely. We'll see if t his produces anything feasible, but at the worst case scenario, I get better reacquainted with C++, and we get some demo material we can include in a resume.

Journal Journal: Reading Material

Most of this was probably quoted at some point within Slashdot, but it's part of the reading that I've enjoyed over my morning cup of hot tea (I've given up coffee after drinking it more than daily every day for five years. Harsh.). I'll leave commenting on so that I can append more articles to this thread as I find them.

Journal Journal: Because it was fun...

Started writing on a thread in a forum with interesting 'player combat' rules: A forum poster creates an avatar, a 'Forum Warrior', and describes the warrior in some detail. The next poster creates a new warrior and introduces him. It's then the responsibility of the original warrior to post how the newcomer triumphs over him in battle.

Afterwards, another poster creates a new warrior, and the victor in the last battle writes how the new warrior has been overthrown. Would make it interesting to see how 'petty' the warriors can become, and what kind of imagination can be used to determine how your own warrior, no matter how invulnerable, can be defeated.

Mindless entertainment.
