Journal: First post in four years?

I found a link to an active Slashdot thread today on reddit, and felt obliged to join the fray with a smartass reply to a smartass comment. Since it had been a while, I went to my user page and saw that my last logged-in post was in 2003. I can't believe it's been that long. Slashdot was my first forum site, my first social news site years before they were called that, my first real large-scale online community since abandoning the BBS scene for the Web in the early 90s.

Then there was Fark until Fark sucked, Digg until Digg sucked, reddit until ... the present day ... and who knows what's next? I always considered myself a slashdotter even when my visits became rare and my posts nonexistent. I miss good old numeric karma and the scene seems to have settled down a lot, probably because there are so many other social news sites catering to the trolls and morons (not that there aren't plenty of them left here).

Anyway, I'm not sure where I'm going with this, except that Fark sucks and Digg sucks and Reddit will surely soon suck, but Slashdot, you have maintained an even level of suckiness for a decade now, and I don't see you sucking worse anytime in the near future. Happy tenth birthday.
