Journal NeMon'ess's Journal: PS3 to support keyboard and mice for gaming 5

So says theinquirer.

Meaning: No more auto-aiming in shooters for those who want to use a mouse. More importantly, Diabloesqe games can take advantage of the mouse. Age of Empires and Rome: Total War can use the mouse. So can the Sims.

Any genre the PC had a lock on can finally be ported to a console in high-res, uncompromised glory. But since console titles sell far better, I hope to see more profits for the developers, more variety and competition within the genres, and even higher production values now that titles can perhaps double their sales. All from a $400 box with the latest and greatest hardware inside.

Does this mean some developers might stop taking the trouble to bother developing for the PC at all? Probably. Do I care? Nope. If MS would announce WinXP 360, I could buy a console, an upgraded hard drive, and an external DVD burner and stop upgrading my PC.

PS3 to support keyboard and mice for gaming

  • Hooray, Command and Conquer on the console? HalfLife3??
  • First off, keyboards and mice were not designed as game input devices an thus feel like they aren't sometimes (keyboard much more than mouse). Don't get me wrong I love PC Gaming, but sometimes a keyboard feels awkward. Especially since for some reason joysticks and gamepads fell out of favor for PC gaming.

However another problem exists with putting strategy games on consoles. Consider how differently the console and PC are used. With a computer screen, you're generally sitting 1-2 feet away from the sc
    • I'd say joysticks are still popular but only for flight sims. Racing gamers buy a wheel for realism. No PC gamer wants to use a gamepad when they could have a stick or wheel. For shooters a mouse is king for precision. For the other genres, a keyboard is nice for having lots of keys.

I expect most with an HDTV will have a 30 inch or larger screen, so while they sit farther back, it kinda works out. Personally, if I had a TV (got a computer instead) I'd sit 6 feet away only if it was 40 inches or larger.
      • Yeah, that's the problem with the whole console gaming idea. To play console games, you also have to sink a grand or two into a tv set, which is more than you would pay for a kick-arse computer and monitor.:P
        • IIRC, this generation MS and Sony will finally support monitors in HD. So while I don't have a TV, I'll be able to game from my usual position, in front of a monitor.

The less time planning, the more time programming.
