Journal Journal: Removal of software copyrights...
This is what I think about the copyright lawsuit that was filled in California by that IP lawyer.
By removing copyrights on software a person will then have to file a patent for a piece of code to protect it. Patent protection requires money that ONLY big corporations have cause they will be able to "protect" their IP investments.
At the same time, these same big companies will then be able to steal patented IP technology from smaller corporations/individuals cause the Government will not be involved, since it won't be a copyright issue.
By removing copyright protection, pirating of software will not be illegal anymore cause there won't be any legal protection. This means that the FBI won't have to be involved in protecting software.
What will this do to the GPL? Lots. From reading the GPL, it is given protection under copyright law. By removing the copyright protection, OSS will be forced to file for patents on it's software- which costs money and forces ownership. Also, the bigger companies will then be able to steal the patents cause they have money to fight protracted legal battles.
To me, this lawsuit is a legal war that some software company is putting forth. It's too "convenient" of a legal tactic for it not to be that way.
I wonder if anyone has ideas on this?
