Journal Journal: A fresh look at Linux
Many years ago (about 2000 or 2001 if I recall) I bought a boxed copy of SuSe Linux, dual-booted one of my computers, and gave open source software a go. It didn't pan out so well at all. I couldn't connect to the internet, I had no idea how to configure any of my hardware the installer missed, and I more or less felt completely lost.
Fast forward to 2006 -- Under the guidance of my Linux-guru friend and a few online forums, I'm going to give it another shot. On my spare computer (AMD 1700+/1024MBR/80GHDD/ATI 9500) I've set up Kubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger). The installer ran and setup everything perfectly so far. I thought I had a problem with my soundcard, but as it turns out I just had the speakers plugged in incorrectly.
My aim is to turn this box into a webserver using my dsl connection. I have my domain Ultimafark.com setup with my boss to point to my DSL hostname. Apparently I can have my router port forward all the inbound port 80 (html) requests to the LAN IP that is my Kubunutu box.
As of today I'm having trouble getting apache set up. Installing a program on Linux is a lot different than just clicking an .exe in Windows.
So far it's a fun experiment though.
Oh yeah, I also figured what better place to keep track of my Linux adventure than here on Slashdot?
