Journal: A world-wide network without ANY central authority

I recently got to read this. It handles about the internet becoming of the people. That made me ask a question about it:

Is it in some way possible to have a network of the size of the internet without any organisation that controls anything about it?

I know there is some IPv6 autoconfiguring, but haven't had time to really understand IPv6. But i imagine that if you generate an IP address of the MAC address (as IIRC IPv6 does), you need huge routing tables. All, please share your opinion.
