The Internet

Journal Journal: The future of the internet 3

As a man who sleeps little, wonders a lot and tries "to make things work better" by analyzing every detail of a problem, (be it a problem that people are aware of or not.. yet) I am drawn to the internet like a moth to a flame (yes actually as clumsily and stupidly as the image depicts at times).

The dawn of the commercial internet saw a great deal of excitement around retail shopping, the provision (and search of course) of information, and free e-mail. Everyone ran around like they overdosed on double skinny mocha cappuccino's, with big smiles and eyes wide with anticipation. Web 1.0 was born and relatively shortly after there were only a few survivors. Alright these few survivors turned out to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars for their efforts but the point is that the market (the sellers) matured in what they realised the users (buyers) actually were prepared to do on the internet. And what they wanted. Basically there was safer money to be made (by those that already had too much, and hadn't lost it all on one of the disaster websites. No names) investing in blue chip shares, property and other very boring stuff, and they "upped anchor" and left.

This left the door open to a number of people that either stumbled upon or had the smarts to invest in what everyone was really trying to use the internet for - porn. Only Kidding although I'm sure there is good money to be made there. Seriously though, the internet was being used to connect PEOPLE in a way that was anonymous if you chose to be. You now had control over the content of conversations and interaction in a way that you couldn't in "normal", "non-virtual" interaction under society's rules.
Perfect. A world where the rules of society can be re-set and re-defined.... at least to a degree.
So this is Web 2.0 - A world where "my space" and "you tube" rule but on the corporate side, software like salesforce.com and many recruitment sites (I'm not going to name them as I don't want to give them the publicity for personal reasons) have taken business processes and the subsequent storage of data to the internet and offered a cheaper, faster, more available service. The only thing I worry about is the security, and I'm sure there are many of you who will opine and either put my mind at ease or scare the pants off me.

So, after all that rambling, I'm keen to hear from the people that really matter in this area of the world (I've read many of the stories, questions and responses here and feel comfortable enough that the brainpower on this site is akin to that of a Stephen Hawking clone factory) regarding the following:

What will web 3.0 consist of and what will it be like?
